PON vs Ethernet

Two different ways to build the networks of the future

Fibre is fibre, right? The light travels in the glass, the data goes back and forth, and everything feels fast. But behind the scenes, there are different ways to build the network itself – and it makes a big difference for both operation and economy. Two of the most common models are Ethernet and PON (Passive Optical Network).

Most people are familiar with Ethernet. It’s like a city full of traffic lights: at every intersection, there’s a switch that controls the traffic. It’s efficient, but each intersection requires power, cooling, and ongoing maintenance. The larger the network becomes, the more “traffic lights” you need to set up – and the higher the energy bill.

PON works in a completely different way. Here we instead have a central point, an OLT (Optical Line Terminal), which sends out the signal. Out in the network, it is distributed via passive splitters – no cables to power outlets, no fans spinning, just optics doing the job. At the user’s end, there is then an ONT that translates the light into usable data. The result is a network that essentially takes care of itself: fewer active devices, lower energy consumption, and simpler operation.

The difference is noticeable in everyday life. An Ethernet network can draw hundreds of watts at each node, while a PON network requires no power at all in the field. It’s not just a saving on electricity costs – it’s also a way to build more sustainably.

Does that mean that PON is always the best? Not necessarily. Ethernet has its advantages, especially in environments where point-to-point connections are needed. But for municipal networks, residential areas or campuses where many users will share the infrastructure, PON is often the smarter choice – simply because it is less hassle.

And that is exactly what we like at Tellus Fiber: hassle-free fibre.
