What is the difference?
PON technology (Passive Optical Network) is the foundation of many modern fibre networks. It enables the construction of smart, passive networks without active equipment between the node and the customer – which means lower costs, less maintenance, and high reliability.
But which standard is the right one to invest in today – GPON or XGS-PON?
Here we clarify the difference.
GPON - stable and proven
GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) has been the standard for many years. It provides up to 2.5 Gbit/s downstream and 1.25 Gbit/s upstream, which is more than sufficient for households and small businesses.
The advantages are clear: GPON is cost-effective, reliable, and well-tested.
It is a safe solution for networks that do not require extreme bandwidth – perfect for today’s urban networks and broadband operators.
XGS-PON - next generation fibre access
As needs grow, GPON does not always suffice. That’s where XGS-PON comes into play.
It provides 10 Gbit/s symmetrically, meaning the same high speed both upstream and downstream.
XGS-PON is suitable for networks where customers demand more – such as business customers, data centres, and future-proof urban networks. Additionally, it is backward compatible with GPON, so the upgrade can proceed smoothly without replacing everything at once.
The difference in brief
Function | GPON | XGS-PON |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | 2.5 Gbit/s down / 1.25 Gbit/s up | 10 Gbit/s symmetrically |
| Capacity | Suitable for households | For business networks & higher loads |
| Cost | Lower investment | Higher, but more future-proof |
| Compatibility | Standardised | Backwards compatible with GPON |
| Typical use cases | Residential areas, small networks | Data centres, operator networks, future-proof city networks |
When should you choose what?
The simple answer: GPON is sufficient today – XGS-PON takes you into the future.
If you are building a network for households and small businesses, GPON is often the most cost-effective choice.
However, if you are planning for higher loads, symmetrical traffic or services with low latency requirements – then XGS-PON is the right way to go.
Many operators choose to run both in parallel to grow gradually.
The future of PON in Sweden
More and more Swedish networks are already upgrading to XGS-PON.
The driving forces are increased bandwidth needs, cloud services and demands for energy-efficient networks.
With PON technology, you get a solution that is both sustainable and scalable – and ready for the next generation of broadband.
